Photobooks: In Circulation
A photobook is not just a collection of photographs – it is a form of thinking in constant flux. Photobooks: In Circulation continues the webinar series by Aalto Photography. In partnership with Utopias Lahti and Photobooks from Finland, we invite three speakers who work with photographic publications as a form of interconnected media. This year, the program concentrates on the nordics, with speakers from Finnish, Swedish and Danish scenes. Each guest will share their practice, with a focus on sustainable and circular modes of production and the social practices taking place around publications. Each session consists of a talk followed by a Q&A discussion with the audience. The program is produced by Aalto Photography, Utopias Lahti and PBFF, in collaboration with Reflektor and bookRoom.
In the original program, Julia Mejnertsen was scheduled for May 20th, but unfortunately had to cancel and Walter Costa will present instead.

Sauli Sirviö

Sauli Sirviö’s artistic practice is grounded in fieldwork and archiving. His archives consist of publications, photographs, and an extensive collection of found artefacts. In December 2024, he published Archiving ’en plein air’ (Utu Press), which was selected for the Finnish Book Art Committee’s ”Beautiful Books of the Year 2024” -collection.
Karl Larsson

Karl Larsson is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice intersects photography, archival activism, and independent publishing. Since 2003, he has amassed The Million Project—an unprecedented archive of over two million photographs documenting the structures of everyday life. This monumental body of work serves as the engine for PUUT –Publicering & Utlåning, a nomadic artist’s book library initiated in 2018.
Walter Costa

Walter Costa is an Italian visual artist and curator whose work bridges archival projects, editing and design, collaborative artivism, visual pedagogy, independent publishing and curation. After 15 years living, working and teaching in Spain, Brazil and the Netherlands, in 2023 he returned to his hometown, Ravenna, where he opened Tiratura—dialogue space for images: a creative hub with a library of over 2,000 photography books and a Risograph studio. Tiratura promotes and produces sustainable, independent publications, both for individual artists and as the result of collaborative and artivist processes involving local communities outside the photography bubble. He suffers from a severe form of bibliophilia, but refuses treatment.
Photobooks from Finland is also arranging addition program during the second week of the festival: Johannes Romppanen will host a Photobook Club in Lahti on Friday May 15th and Karl Larsson will hold a workshop on Sunday May 17th. All events are free of cost, warmly welcome!
